Why I Started Offering the Smart Housing Moves for Seniors Clas

As we age, our housing needs inevitably change. Yet, many seniors continue to live in homes that are no longer safe or suitable for their current lifestyle. This reality inspired me to start offering the Smart Housing Moves for Seniors class—an initiative close to my heart.

The decision to leave a longtime home filled with cherished memories is never easy. It can feel like leaving a part of yourself behind. However, staying put in a home that’s too large or financially draining often leads to costly deferred maintenance. Over time, these expenses add up, and many seniors find their properties losing value instead of appreciating. This not only affects their own financial stability but also creates dilemmas and burdens for their loved ones down the line.

That said, moving isn’t the only path. Sometimes it is possible—and preferable—to make a home safer and more accessible to allow seniors to stay longer in the comfort of their familiar surroundings. In my class, we explore practical modifications like changing carpeting to solid, slip-resistant flooring, widening doorways to accommodate walkers and wheelchairs, swapping out toilets for taller, easier-to-use models, and adding handrails and grab bars in key areas. We also look carefully at whether essential spaces like bathrooms and laundry areas are accessible without stairs, which is vital for safety and independence.

One of the most important points I try to emphasize in my class is the power of making proactive housing decisions while you still have control. Aging will inevitably bring changes, but choosing smart housing moves now—whether that means modifying an existing home or making a well-planned move—can help seniors avoid the stress and urgency of forced decisions later. It’s about crafting a living situation that is safer, more manageable, and financially sustainable—so they can enjoy peace of mind and independence longer.

Through the Smart Housing Moves for Seniors class, I provide guidance, resources, and practical strategies to help seniors and their families navigate these transitions thoughtfully. My goal is to empower participants to take charge of their housing future with confidence and clarity, respecting both their emotional ties and financial realities.

If you or someone you know is facing the challenge of housing changes in later life, I encourage you to consider the benefits of making smart housing moves sooner rather than later. It’s about securing a better quality of life today and for the years ahead.
